Psalm 23:1
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
Quoted from King James Version (public domain).
The story
Why this verse
The shepherd’s psalm does not begin with a request. It begins with a relationship: the LORD is my shepherd. From that relationship flows the strange, quiet confidence of “I shall not want.” This is not a promise that every desire will be met. It is the deeper assurance that the One leading me knows what I need — green pasture, still water, a restored soul, a path that is right even when it is hard. I Lack Nothing rests in that provision. It is a song for the moment when the hand holding you matters more than the map in front of you.
Lyrics
The words of the song
Oh Lord… You are my Shepherd…
I shall not want…
You are my Shepherd, I lack nothing
You lead me beside still waters, my soul finds peace
You restore my heart, You make me whole
You guide my steps in Your perfect way
Even in the valley, I will not fear
Your presence surrounds me, You are near
I lack nothing, I have all in You
My cup is overflowing, Your love is true
Goodness and mercy follow me
I will dwell in You eternally
I lack nothing… hey… I lack nothing…
You are with me… always with me…
No fear, no lack, no shadow…
I belong to You… oh Lord…
You prepare a table before me
In the presence of my enemies
You anoint my head, I overflow
Your favor is all I know
I lack nothing, I have all in You
My cup is overflowing, Your love is true
Goodness and mercy follow me
I will dwell in You eternally
I lack nothing… (echo: nothing in You)
I lack nothing… (echo: nothing in You)
You are with me… (always with me)
You are with me… (I will not fear)
Goodness and mercy… (follow me)
Goodness and mercy… (follow me)
I am safe in You…
I am held by You…
Forever in Your presence…
I lack nothing, I have all in You
My cup is overflowing, Your love is true
Goodness and mercy follow me
I will dwell in You eternally
I will dwell… I will dwell…
In Your presence… forever…
Reflection
Sit with it
Where have you confused a want with a need? What would it look like to trust the Shepherd with the difference?
A prayer
Shepherd of my soul, lead me. Quiet the part of me that grasps. Teach me to rest in Your provision and to follow where You go.
Amen.
