Proverbs 24:16
“For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.”
Quoted from King James Version (public domain).
The story
Why this verse
Proverbs 24:16 is a small verse with a large mercy: the righteous person falls seven times and rises again. Seven is not a precise tally; it is the number of completeness, the way of saying “again and again.” The point is not that failure never happens. The point is that failure is not the final word for those who belong to God. You Have the Right to Try Again carries that permission into the room where shame likes to sit. Getting up is not proof that you never fell. It is the shape of a life held by grace.
Lyrics
The words of the song
I stumbled but I never stayed down
God lifted my feet back on solid ground
Every setback became my testimony
His grace keeps writing my victory
Pre-Chorus
No matter how many times I fall
His mighty hand is holding all
I’m getting up, I’m standing tall
My Father never lets me crawl
Chorus
I got the right to try again,
Rise again, shine again!
Seven times, I’ll stand again,
God says, “Child, begin again!”
Failure couldn’t write my name
Mercy came and changed the game
Every tear became a song
With Jesus I’ve been strong all along
Pre-Chorus
The enemy thought it was the end
But Heaven sent a faithful Friend
His promises will never bend
I’m rising higher once again
Chorus
I got the right to try again,
Rise again, shine again!
Seven times, I’ll stand again,
God says, “Child, begin again!”
Leader: Who picked you up?
Crowd: Jesus did!
Leader: Who made a way?
Crowd: Jesus did!
Leader: Are you giving up?
Crowd: Never! Never!
Leader: Why?
Crowd: We rise forever!
Chorus
I got the right to try again,
Rise again, shine again!
Seven times, I’ll stand again,
My God says, “Child, begin again!”
Hey! Try again!
Hey! Dance again!
Hey! Praise again!
The righteous rise again!
“For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again!”
Lift your hands, lift your voice—
You’ve got the right to try again!
Reflection
Sit with it
What have you written off as a permanent verdict? What would it mean to treat it instead as a fall — and to get up one more time?
A prayer
Merciful God, thank You that failure is not the end of my story. Lift me gently. Give me the courage to rise and the humility to ask for help.
Amen.
